simple, everyday physical objects—transforming them into speaking and listening objects, "objects that hold memory."

These products share a common frame work meant to make the interactions with these objects memorable.  The framework consists of three pillars-

1. Surprise- This memory is formed when your existing understanding of a situation or concept is displaced by a new occurrence. Its like the first words of a baby

2. Leaning- This is your semantic memory- like when you learn a new skill like learning a musical instrument.

3. Nostalgia- Its like an old favorite song, or finding a mixed tape. It brings you back to a different space and time.

The users are people who are looking for poetic interactions, who are more cautious and clear about adoption of technology and will do so only if it provides them the kind of interaction they want to have. The technology is a layer of code, custom electronics, and off-the-shelf components, designed to be adaptable to a range of applications.

The first product in the Ars Memorativa family is a simple glass bottle, re-imagined as a space to hold memories. The video demonstrates the scenarios of using the bottle with the three pillar of the framework applied to it.

How does it work?

The voice bottle is made of glass and is reimagined as a space to hold memories. Its based on the metaphor of Message in a bottle. The interaction is simple to use, and the impact it has is memorable.

It works like this-
1. A magnetic sensor in the cap detects when its opened.
2. You can record into the bottle, and when it shuts it competes the recording. In this case mentioned above, the bottle comes in pairs- you record into the bottle for a period of time.
3. When the physical exchange of the bottles happens the bottle switches from recording to the listening mode- the other person can then listen to all the recordings. in the sequence they were recorded. Savoring them one moment at a time.

Why Sound?

Sound is powerful medium. In cognitive psychology- scientists say- It is because of the sense of sound that we are able to SEQUENCE, UNDERSTAND and by that affect REMEMBER things. Sound can create memorable human to human interactions.

We have the most sophisticated communication technologies in out pockets but Speed and efficiency seem to be at the core of these technologies. Design for sound as a sense often seems either completely ignored, or an after thought.

I decided to map out the different ways we consume content - personal or broadcast on an axis ranging from a controlled-authored experience to a freer and more imaginative one. For example on your extreme left are mediums like Television, and video chat, they are direct video input mediums, as you move along the right towards imagination you see phone text, radio, books and letters all of those mediums do not usually have an accompanying visual attached, and hence it is more open to imagination.

There is a practical and genuine connection between sound and imagination.

When I was researching cognitive psychology, I also found: that when the prompts from the environment lack the visuals, our mind is forced to imagine them. That process of creating the visuals in our minds is what sets that memory apart from the ones where you are fed direct visual inputs.

How did I get here?

Last year I experienced my first snow. What really surprised me about snow was the silence. its not just how it looks, its how it sounds, footsteps are clearer, street sounds are muffled. I was so excited, I ran to my computer, forced my parents to come online and tilted my computer out of the window, I really wanted them to be a part of my experience. They saw what I saw, they heard what I heard. Yet they did not experience what I experienced. Something was lost in the translation.

This made wonder if experiences could richer if they were formed through imagination fueled by sounds. I tested this hunch with a friend back in India. We spent a few hours listening to each others soundscapes, the recording you heard earlier was from that session, it was diwali, the festival of lights there, and a silent afternoon here. We also spent the same amount of time on video with the sound muted. The experiences were radically different. Listening to firecrackers, street vendors, prayers was far more successful in evoking my own memories than the video was.

At first I started with overlaying sound onto existing content in a book to see what happens. Although the idea of it was beautiful, when I actually made the prototype and tested it, I realized that the format of the book was incompatible with my framework as it was already a meaningful interaction. Moreover, it wasn't a direct human to human interaction.

This is when I switched to the metaphor of a message in a bottle. It is an intuitive choice as it a commonly understood metaphor. The point was to show that interaction with any day to day object can be made meaningful which was previously only a mundane interaction.

The research spanned 4 weeks with us using different kinds of research methods like sending out cultural probe kits, interviews, secondary research. Synthesizing the research finding was the key point in the progress as it shifted our hypothesis going into the research- which we then reframed to align with the key findings. After a marathon concept and ideation session 3 ideas were detailed out to purse further and then narrowed down to the one which seemed most promising.

By first focusing on independent workers, it hopes to create a space for feedback and new ideas. Based on our research, the ideas presented in this service hope to promote self-awareness, a sense of commitment to one's purpose, and also promote socializing as a positive and necessary component of one's life. As a service, Dinner Calling defines a successful conversation differently. In a healthy relationship model you care about the other person’s thoughts and concerns as much as you do your own. This relationship model gives value to both parties and is the true intention of the service. That said, if someone wants to pitch an idea, and the other person wants and values that approach, the relationship is positive. If another relationship values conversation about social change and wants to keep discussing and sharing ideas, that relationship will also work.

Dinner Calling breaks down to 5 distinct stages:

Signup
Most of the users of our service come via invitation. Once invited, a potential member can come in and set up their profile. Curator then conducts a phone interview , if the curator finds the applicant a fit he is invited to a complimentary dinner. 8-10 members are then sent a dinner invitation specifying the date and time of the meal, and a small amount of information on each invitee.

Dinner curation
Information from the responses to the dinner invitation are processed by the Dinner Calling web service into a database accessible by Curators. Each curator will create two groups of four from the initial 8-10 and send each group a confirmation email the following week.

Dinner
One member from each dinner is elected the Secret Leader. The Secret Leader's job is to keep the conversation moving without dominating it. No other members are aware of who the leader is.

Feedback and Reflection
Feedback is one of the the most valuable components of Dinner Calling. In order to be maintain membership, each user must contribute to the community by submitting feedback. Feedback written for a fellow member can be sent to LinkedIn as an endorsement. This feedback is collected and processed by the Dinner Calling web service

Service Intent:
1.	To redefine networking (meeting new people, sharing ideas...)
2.	To create opportunities for new relationships between invitees
3.	To create opportunities for conversation between invitees

Metrics of Success:
A dinner will be considered a success if each member achieves one of the following:
1.	Makes one new contact
2.	Comes across one idea that inspires them
3.	To become a new contact for someone else
4.	To offer one idea that inspires

Drawing from the metaphor of a shoebox full of dog-eared moments, MixBox lets u create a set of experiences for friends and family even from remotely. By recording personal audio messages and overlaying familiar music each task is given the qualities of a time machine enabling nostalgic experiences.

Inspiration is collected from various social media data, for example a music concert of a particular band that both you and your friend enjoy, or a favorite cup cake shop you both love.

This project was heavily dependent on creating a narrative arc to really communicate the need for such a tool. We did a few rounds of user journeys in different formats before we fixed on a way to communicate the idea. With each step the user is prompted to document their experiences thereby creating an inventory of personal experiences to look back on.

Instead of replacing the human voice(which is usually what happens in technology mediated communication), Mixbox augments the human voice's reach ultimately pointing to the potential impact of interactions which keep in mind our other senses besides sight.

Time is a quality. It can be recorded by capturing surrounding moments or events. -Einstein’s Dream

Brief: Capturing time through moments with the intention of capturing the complexity of the web of human relationships by using the concept of embodied interaction.

Human relationships are rarely linear. With the effect of that our memory and the moments that make it are never linear and unidirectional.

We examined the existing mechanism for memory capture and sharing, and found that none of the technologies, platforms allow a non linear and relationship oriented browsing, viewing, sharing of moments. Most mediums with the exception of a print photo, lack the element of sentimentality and tactility which is associated with preserving nostalgic memories. On the other hand technology helps overcome the limits of a physical medium by the virtue of extending it into the virtual space.

The idea of combining the digital and the physical came from the need to preserve the tactility of the medium and yet make the message (the moments captures through images) transcend the limits of a physical and limited medium. Rubik’s cube as a structure lends itself to a play of permutations and combinations between different colors and surfaces.

Summary: The Mixed Cube is designed for the people who like to delve into the dynamics of their relationships and recollect their memories from that perspective.

It is also designed for anyone who likes collecting, receiving, sharing and looking at photographs as the triggers for events and moments in their life.

By the affordance of its structure, it encourages a different sort of interaction with otherwise static images. It leads people into exploring and making connections, between several people in order to view the memories attached to them.

Postcard Poets is a live ongoing service created as a culmination of learning from Entrepreneurial Design Course. The service provides a new platform for Poetry enthusiasts to experience their favorite poetry though the undiluted analog medium of postcards. It is also a service for new writers to get published and reach an interested audience.

The customer subscribes to one of the four curators which represent a theme who select and send poetry via post to the customer.

Running the company over a span for many months, we went through several rounds of iteration in terms of the product(postcards) as well as the website, as the customer feedback rolled in. A traction was created quite early on in the process by some heavily followed design bloggers writing about us which led us to gather substantial enough following to constantly gather feedback and iterate on designing the business, service, and the product as a holistic system.

This venture was our first step into entrepreneurship and it opened us up to the many many challenges and satisfactions of running a people/human centered service.

It is a prototype for a new wearable electronic product which explores the role of gestures. On a cold night, as you rub your hands together discreetly in company, your feet heat up.

After several rounds of user testing, observations and iterating we decided to do a video to give a sense of the usecase scenario in mind while developing it.

By aggregating and publicizing demand, Seedpeak promotes growth in the CSA system in the city.

The brief was to develop solutions for a Food Systems Initiative mentioned in the PlaNYC, a growth plan released by the New York State govt. for the future of the city. After research we came to understand the complex food ecosystem in NYC and chose to focus on the availability and access to fresh organic food for New Yorkers. Seedspeak, is a platform that unifies and visualized latent demand for Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and makes it easy for people to get together and form newer CSAs, since the existing ones get full very easily and there is no mechanism to connect the people on individual CSA waitlists.

The idea was explained through a series of illustrated user journeys to understand the various touch points of the service with the potential customers, and at what points is the service needed.

The final deliverable, is a platform that unifies data through aggregating information from various individual participating CSAs, who would sport a badge to track traffic on their after the CSA membership is full and redirect them to Seedspeak. The other component is a pubic installation to create awareness about CSAs and to give the residents of a particular area to vote for getting CSAs in their neighborhood. This mechanism is used to collect the contact information of interested individuals which can be then used to send updates if someone from the community volunteers to organize a CSA. Hence providing a clear platform to bridge the gap between low supply and high demand of CSAs.
